A few months ago we were awakened in the middle of the night by an extremely loud rumbling noise. I jumped out of bed and ran toward the noise to see what on earth was going on in our house. It turned out the the subwoofer had decided to let us know what it thought of all the loud music that Karen plays. I started trying to figure out what went wrong.
|
| Since Karen's plants and I already have bad blood between us, I blamed it on them. I figured that some of the water that spilled over when they were watered made its way into the circuitry inside the subwoofer. I had wiped a puddle off of the cabinet more than once, and initially I figured that the puddles were left there by Lauren on days when her diaper couldn't hold their own (or hers, for that matter). But we soon realized that the plants living above the cabinet leaked whenever they were watered. So I took the box apart expecting to see water damage. I actually didn't find anything that looked like water damage but I did notice that the two big capacitors that it uses to filter the positive and negative voltage rails for the amplifier were bulging in their packages. That seemed to fit the symptom we were seeing, so without testing anything, I ordered some replacement caps. They came a few weeks ago but I've been too busy to replace them. With the new job, I've been getting home a little earlier, so I took some time to do the repair. I am very pleased to report that we can now watch movies with big explosions again. The subwoofer lives again. I don't know why it died but I sure am glad that it was something that I could fix without too much trouble. |
